About My Art

RushingorDragging.JPEG

In my art I depict the pursuit of perfection and explore its effect on people. Perfection comes in many forms, and can be derived from both organic and synthetic sources. Though we devote extreme effort or time to achieving greatness, we consistently fall short. Our idea of perfection never matches its initial conception, often bringing more destruction than satisfaction. In contrast, perfection has a way of appearing when we least expect it. In childhood, memories, or fleeting moments, we can stumble upon perfection without even trying. There is no necessary standard of effort, no benchmark of success, or definitive metric to structure perfection, which my pieces suggest.

My work evolves through my media. I began working on my pieces with pencil, sticking to the subjects and compositions I was comfortable with. This process was incredibly tedious and required copious amounts of time. As I progressed in the exploration of my theme, I tried to loosen my process, using less pre-planning and switching to pen. Using pen forced me to flow past mistakes rather than fixate on them, implementing the critiques within my subjects into my process. I learned to embrace a looser style, and in doing so, I enjoyed the process of making my art more. Additionally, I experimented with mediums like charcoal to further challenge myself.
